DyeStat preseason picks to qualify for NXN: The Woodlands TX College Park TX
Current Prediction: The Woodlands TX Southlake Carroll TX
Notes: Most years, the Nike South Regional is a redux of the Texas 6A State meet and this season will be no different. The Woodlands comes in as the region favorite after edging rival Southlake Carroll by six points at the state meet. The difference maker at the state meet was runner-up Gavin Hoffpauir from The Woodlands. Southlake Carroll ran its best race of the year at state and broke up The Woodlands’ 2-5 pack, but could not make up for Hoffpauir’s two points. SLC is hoping to keep its streak of seven straight NXN trips alive, a streak that includes five NXR South titles. Also in the hunt for a podium finish is El Paso Eastwood TX. Eastwood placed third in the Texas State meet, finishing 29 points behind Southlake Carroll. If the Eastwood team is going to have a shot at Portland, the Troopers are going to have to close the 60-second 1-5 gap they had at the state meet. Their best meet of the year was at the Desert Twilight Festival in Arizona when they had a 39-second 1-5 gap and ran within 36 points of national No. 10 Desert Vista AZ. Last year, the South saw the biggest upset in the Nike regional races. Ninth-place state finisher College Park TX ran its race of the year and shocked the region with a second-place finish, securing a trip to Portland. That scenario is unlikely for College Park to repeat after finishing 11th at state this year. However, Flower Mound TX finished eighth this year in the Texas 6A State meet and has a chance to make the big leap to at least a podium spot. If low stick Alex Maier is back healthy, Flower Mound’s top two could potentially score three points with the emergence of talented sophomore Kirk Jarrett. Jarrett won the state championship in Maier’s absence and a 1-2 Flower Mound finish could make the scoring interesting as the huge field crosses the finish line.

Our preseason picks to qualify for NXN: Keller TX Marcus TX
Our Current Prediction: Keller TX Hebron TX Notes: Keller TX is the top team in the South Region. Something drastic would need to happen Saturday for Keller to not qualify for NXN. However, the race for second is much closer. There are four or five teams that seem capable of grabbing the second automatic NXN berth. At the top of the list is Hebron TX. Hebron finished second at the Texas 6A State meet. Not far behind Hebron was Southlake Carroll TX. Southlake Carroll was a mid-season favorite for the second spot, but the race has narrowed through the championship portion of the season. The Dragons have been to NXN the past two seasons and with the right race at the NXR South Regional, could make it three in a row. Other teams to keep an eye on are Flower Mound TX, third at the Texas 6A State meet, and Marcus TX, which did not qualify for the Texas State meet. Marcus finished within four points of Hebron, Southlake Carroll and Flower Mound at the District 5 Championship. Also, the top two 5A Texas teams, Frisco Liberty and Randall, could make a play for a top finish this weekend. |
